Parental Control of Facebook Friends - The RedFlag Story
With parental control of Facebook friends, you can better protect your child from risky individuals using false profiles. Read the RedFlag story to learn about Facebook concerns for parents and why it is so important to know who is communicating with your child online.
RedFlag co-founder, Jonathan Weisz has first-hand knowledge of the risks associated with Facebook friends among younger children. It was his family’s experience with a false Facebook “friend” that motivated him to establish a Facebook parental control monitoring service called RedFlag.
In January of 2011, a Facebook user assuming the persona of an attractive teen girl named "Autumn" became online Facebook friends with a large number of middle school students creating the illusion of close relationships. Each student assumed this deceitful Facebook member was a real person, since all their friends "knew" her and conversed with her. The fake Facebook friend gradually gained the trust of one child at the school as a Facebook friend and eventually arranged a direct meeting.
Learning about Autumn from his son, Jonathan Weisz researched Autumn's Facebook profile which he believed to be "high risk," and discovered that the name being used was one of hundreds of profiles created by this individual.
This Facebook profile displayed many signs that, when analyzed, could be easily identified and flagged as false and therefore very risky to children and teens.
These suspicious characteristics included:
- 14 year old attractive girl with thousands of pictures and a high volume of postings
- Thousands of male Facebook friends, ranging in age from 12-25, from all over the U.S.
- Did not attend a school in the same state as her Facebook "friends"
The incident spurred Weisz to apply his knowledge and experience in technology to develop the RedFlag service, knowing there must be tens of thousands of kids and parents in the same situation. RedFlag is designed for concerned parents who allow their kids to enjoy the social networking scene, but also want to make sure they are protected with parental control and monitoring of their online Facebook friends.
